What Do You Need with a Moses Basket? Mattress, Sheets, Liner and Accessories Explained
A Moses basket does not need to be filled with lots of accessories. The main essentials are a firm, flat mattress that fits the basket correctly and snug fitted sheets made for that mattress. You may also choose a removable basket liner, a stand and spare sheets to make everyday use easier.
If you are preparing for your first baby, however, it is not always obvious which items are essential, which are optional and which should not be placed in the basket at all. This guide will help you put together a practical Moses basket set without buying things you do not need.

1. Does a Moses basket need a mattress?
Yes. A Moses basket intended as a sleep space needs a firm, flat mattress that fits its internal shape and dimensions correctly.
The mattress should sit level inside the basket without folding, bowing or leaving significant gaps around the edges. Avoid trying to make a mattress fit by squeezing in one that is too large or using a mattress that is noticeably too small.

2. What type of mattress should you use?
Choose a mattress that is:
- Firm and flat
- The correct size and shape for the basket
- Supportive rather than soft or deeply padded
- Covered with a snug fitted sheet
- Kept clean and dry

Do not add extra padding underneath or on top of the mattress to make the basket feel softer. A newborn sleep surface should remain firm, flat and uncluttered.
3. How many Moses basket sheets do you need?
We recommend having three fitted sheets.
Newborns frequently spit up and nappies can leak, so a sheet may need to be changed unexpectedly. Three sheets give you a simple rotation: one on the mattress, one in the wash or drying and one clean in the cupboard.
The sheet should fit closely around the mattress and remain smooth when in use. A loose sheet or a standard piece of fabric tucked around the mattress is not a suitable replacement for a properly fitted sheet.
Using a fitted sheet also means you can remove and wash the sheet regularly instead of removing the mattress cover each time. 4. Do you need a Moses basket liner?
A basket liner is optional rather than essential. It covers the inside walls of the woven basket and can create a softer, more finished appearance.
If you choose a liner, it should:
- Be designed for the size and shape of the basket
- Fit securely without falling into the sleep space
- Be kept away from the baby’s face
- Be removable so that it can be washed
- Be used exactly as instructed
Our cotton liners are removable, which makes cleaning easier and allows you to change the look of the basket. A liner can also help coordinate the Moses basket with the rest of the nursery.

5. Do you need a Moses basket stand?
A stand is optional, but many parents find it convenient. It raises the basket off the floor and can make it easier to reach the baby without bending as low.
If you purchase a stand, confirm that it is compatible with the basket’s dimensions and designed to hold it securely. Place it on a stable, level surface, away from stairs, cords, curtains, heaters and anything a child or pet could pull.
Never place a Moses basket on a table, countertop, sofa, bed or other raised surface as a substitute for a properly fitted stand.

6. What should not go inside a Moses basket?
It can be tempting to decorate a baby basket with cushions, blankets and toys, particularly when preparing the nursery or taking photographs. These items should be removed before the basket is used for sleep.
Keep the sleep space clear of:
- Pillows and cushions
- Loose blankets
- Soft toys and comforters
- Sleep positioners or wedges
- Extra mattresses or folded towels
- Decorative garlands or cords
A baby should be placed on their back on a firm, flat mattress with a snug fitted sheet. Follow the safe-sleep advice given by your healthcare provider and the product instructions that come with your basket and accessories.
Safe-sleep reminder: Styling items may look beautiful in nursery photographs, but a basket prepared for sleep should be simple and clear. Remove all decorative and loose items before placing the baby inside.
7. How do you clean a Moses basket and its accessories?
Always follow the individual care instructions supplied with each product.
For everyday care:
- Remove the mattress, liner and sheet before cleaning the basket.
- Gently wipe the woven basket where necessary rather than soaking it.
- Allow the basket to dry completely in a well-ventilated place.
- Wash removable cotton liners and fitted sheets on gentle cycle only.
- Make sure every component is completely dry before reassembling the basket.
Avoid harsh chemicals and bleach on the handwoven basket. Store it in a dry area and check it regularly for damage, loose fibres or changes to its shape.
8. How long can a baby use a Moses basket?
How long a baby can use a Moses basket depends on the basket manufacturer’s instructions and the baby’s development - not only their age.
Stop using it when the baby reaches the stated weight limit or begins to roll, push up, sit or otherwise move in a way that makes the basket unsuitable. Some babies reach these developmental stages earlier than others, so check the basket regularly and plan the next sleep space in advance.

This may occur when the baby is around 9 kg, but development varies from one baby to another, so the ability to roll is more important than relying on weight alone.
Can you carry a baby in a Moses basket?
No. Never lift or carry the basket while the baby is inside it. The handles make it easier to move the empty basket from one room to another, but the basket is intended as a sleep space - not as a baby carrier - and it is not structurally designed to carry the baby’s weight while being lifted.
Before moving the basket, take the baby out and place them somewhere safe. Then use both handles to move the empty basket.
9. Is it better to buy a complete Moses basket set?
A complete set can be the simplest choice because the basket, mattress, liner and sheets are selected to work together. It reduces the risk of ordering the wrong mattress size or discovering later that your sheets do not fit properly.
